12.1.0.1 to 12.1.0.2 Upgrade

Now that 12.1.0.2 is released and readily available lets see it in action adn upgrade an existing 12c database. I’ll be using the 12c Oracle Developoer Days VM as my lab.

Download linuxamd64_12102_database_1of2.zip and linuxamd64_12102_database_1of2.zip

Unzip the files into a staging area.

Once unzipped run “runInstaller” and follow the prompts. I’ll be running and creating a “software install only” and manually upgrading the database. The install went pretty smoothly and I ignore the warning about swap space. My new 12.1.0.2 home is:

Now copy preupgrd.sql and utluppkg.sql from the new home into a temp directory eg. /tmp and run the preupgrd.sql. No issues to note with the pre upgrade checks.

Now we shutdown the database, change the oratab to point to the new home, copy over the spfile and startup upgrade.

I run the upgrade with the following script.

… and hit my first error.

The developer days VM had a memory_target of 340M. I upped it to 800M and run the upgrade again.

This time it seemed to work all the way to the PDB and failed with:

At the CDB layer the multimedia component was valid but in the PDB it was invalid. I opened the PDB and run the utlrp.sql to compile everything and the status changed to VALID. Seeing the CDB upgrade had gone ok and the PDB had failed I decided to only run the PDB upgrade this time.

This time it all went through with no errors. I then ran the post upgrade scripts to compile and verify everthing is ok.

At this stage it was all good so last thing to do is check the registry.

So there it is. A manual upgrade of the 12c developer days vm to 12.1.0.2. Please note this is only a lab and dev environment and these steps should be verified with the Oracle documentation and Oracle support.

  1. Hi Stojan,
thanks for this script. But it doesn’t work.
I use the same Developer Days-VM like you, but I imported it into VMware 6.x (not VirtualBox).
    $ORACLE_HOME/perl/bin/perl catctl.pl catupgrd.sql
    What is $ORACLE_HOME? /u01/app/oracle/product/12.1.0/dbhome_1 oder 2?
    And which catcl.pl / catupgrd.sql are you using? …/dbhome_1/rdbs/admin or …/dbhome_2/rdbs/admin?
    I tried 4 combinations.
Thinking logical: I want to upgrade from 12.1.0.1 to 12.1.0.2. So I have to use the 2-skripts (not the 1-skripts)?
    Please, what can I do?
    Best regards from Mark

  2. Thank you very much, I was with absolutely no idea about how to do an upgrade like this, but it helped a lot to understand the concept.

    I’ll do it next monday.

    Thanks!
